Everything We Announced at SpeckleCon 2024
We’ve already dropped some rather big product and fundraising news this year, but we kept the best for last!
Our team kicked off SpeckleCon 2024 with a keynote presentation where we spilt the beans on our product plans and wrapped up the biggest year of Speckle growth.
Didn’t have a chance to join us in London? Keep reading to find out the most important announcements!
Speckle Is Inevitable
Speckle started as a Grasshopper plugin for multiplayer collaboration. A few years later, because you needed more and more connectivity and collaboration, Speckle became a connected ecosystem of plugins with a powerful viewer, or simply put, your AEC data hub.
“It’s amazing to see Speckle at the heart of AEC’s most precious asset: data. It’s even more amazing to see so many of you - our community - in one room. You got us to where we are today!” , said Dimitrie Stefanescu, Speckle’s Co-Founder and CEO, as he opened up the main SpeckleCon event in London.
Speckle: The Collaborative Data Hub
Next, Speckle’s Product Lead, Benjamin Ottensten, and Gergő Jedlicska, Lead Software Architect, brought us fresh news from the universe of Speckle collaboration.
Here’s a rundown of their key announcements:
Workspaces are soon out of beta
Speckle’s Workspaces, the best way to collaborate for teams of all sizes, will soon be fully ready to transform how your team works together.
The public beta has been running since September with great success and we’re excited to release Single Sign-On (SSO), data residency and three paid plans in the coming weeks. This will mark the end of the free beta period.
Workspaces are Enterprise-Ready
Workspaces give you maximum control and security. Besides having all your projects and team members in one shared space, you can connect your SSO authentication provider to secure access.
And if you want to go even further, we also give you easy access to data residency so you can control where your project data is hosted. Everything is completely self-serve in a few clicks.
Presenting Workspaces Plans
Based on your team and project needs, you will be able use Workspaces as a part of one of the three paid plans: the Starter, Plus or Business plan.
Each plan will give your team a dedicated workspace with role management, guest users, and domain security. The Plus and Business plans equip your team with SSO and data residency. This way, your team can access projects easily while knowing you’re compliant with regional regulations and the strictest project requirements.
Speckle Gets SOC2 Type 1 Attested
Now we’re not only secure, but we have some pretty strict people attesting that we are!
You’d be surprised how often we hear that open-source software like Speckle is inherently insecure. We have many thoughts on why this is fundamentally wrong, both theoretically and practically, with Speckle.
We’ve secured our SOC2 Type 1 attestation to cut discussions short going forward. If you’re keen on SOC2 Type 2, this will follow soon!
Be sure to follow Speckle's updates in the coming weeks since Workspaces are coming your way, fully ready to change how you work in AEC teams!
Speckle: The Connected Data Hub
Our seasoned Engineers, Kateryna Konieva and Claire Kuang shared thrilling updates on the Connector front. Emphasis on the “thrilling”!
Here’s a rundown of their key announcements:
Presenting New Next-Gen Connectors
After SketchUp, Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino and ArcGIS got their Next-Gen Connector versions in September, it’s time for more!
We have three new additions to the list of the fastest and smoothest Speckle Connectors: Archicad, Civil3D and Tekla!
Next-Gen Connectors Bring Unseen Speed
Compared to our legacy connectors, we’re seeing substantial speed increases when publishing and loading with next-gen Speckle connectors.
Did you change some objects in your model and want to re-publish? With next-gen connectors, this is more than 1000% faster than before because, this time, we’re only processing the changes to keep your model up to date. We repeat: more than a thousand per cent faster!
More than 50% Reduction in Version Size and Memory Footprint
Your Speckle data is lighter than ever: we’re sending the same number of objects but in a much more optimised size.
We’re also taking up much less space on your computer, so you can run more operations without worrying about your computer slowing down.
Multiplayer Modeling
We want you to stay in sync and file-free while developing the same model across different applications, with high-fidelity native geometry!
Real-time Coordination
You can quickly consume Speckle models - with basic geometry and important properties - to use as reference while working in your desktop app.
Connectors are evolving fast, and already achieving outstanding results in their Next-Gen version, so expect a detailed breakdown of what these new developments will bring you in the coming weeks!
Speckle: The Automated Data Hub
Speckle’s Engineer Chuck Driesler and Jonathon Broughton, Advocacy and Developer Relations Lead, known simply as “Jonathon from Speckle”, touched on the updates regarding Speckle Automate.
Here’s a rundown of their key announcements:
Automate Goes Public in Beta
What do we want? To click less. When do we want it? Now!
As we hinted earlier, Speckle Automate public beta will launch with Workspaces, bringing AEC teams a powerful tool for streamlining repetitive workflows.
Curated Public Functions
Not an Automate geek? No problem!
Expect accessible functions for data transformation, model checks, validations, and format conversions—perfect for generating insights, reporting, and simplifying models for all user levels.
Automate Private Functions
Your team, your data, your secret sauce! Collaborate with your Workspace team to build, customise and deploy functions tailored to your specific workflow.
More Speckle Automate content is coming your way in the next few weeks, so keep up if you’ve had enough wasting precious time on repetitive tasks!
Wrap up:
With incredible momentum from this year's major fundraising milestone, we're charging full steam ahead with Speckle as the AEC industry's data hub.
SpeckleCon 2024 is proof of Speckle not being “only” a product making AEC professionals’ lives easier but a movement they want to partake in, share with peers and support in growing.
That’s why we believe this is the turning point in how AEC operates in the digital world!
